Obituary of Leon Jones Jr.
Please share a memory of Leon to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Leon Jones, Jr. passed peacefully from this life the morning of January 27, 2020 after a long battle with illness. He was surrounded and supported by his loving family and caregivers during his final days.
Leon was born in Suffolk, VA on May 3, 1935 to Anna V. Jones and Leon Jones, Sr. He was raised in Washington, DC where he attended Military Road School, Banneker Junior High and Dunbar High School. Growing up, Leon visited his mother at Georgetown University laboratory and became fascinated by science and the medical field. This interest drove him to pursue a career as a Pathologist at Children’s Hospital in Washington, DC until his retirement.
When not working, Leon enjoyed a full array of hobbies. He was an accomplished artist as a photographer and painter. For many years he was rarely seen without his favorite black & silver Canon 35mm camera. Painting was a lifelong hobby. He often shared his passion for painting by giving them to family and friends.
Leon was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He joined the Prince Hall Masons and spent almost a lifetime dedicated to upholding the Brotherhood with both pride and commitment.
He is survived by seven children: Wayne Antonio Addison (Mimi), Stephanie Lynn Byers (Patrick), Stephen Leon Jones, Douglas Leon Jones, Monty Leon Jones, Sr., Lerondo Remon Jones Sr. (Nikki), and Namon LaJae Jones, Sr. (Glenae); one sister, Jacquelyn Irene Proctor; thirty-one grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Anna Virginia Jones (nee. Barnes), his father Leon Jones, Sr., and sister, Ann Marie Brown.
Leon lived his life to the fullest often seen smiling and telling a story so vivid you almost believed you had been there too. He loved to entertain and always had an “open door” policy making all who entered his home feel like family.
