Obituary of Margaree Scranage

Margaree Robinson Scranage, was born on May 25, 1949, in Columbia, South Carolina, to the late Jason, Sr. and Nellie English. As the eldest child, Margaree lovingly and caringly helped raise her younger brothers and sisters.

Margaree “The Queen,” was educated in the Blythewood Public School System in South Carolina. In 1970, she relocated to the Washington metropolitan area and eventually settled in Oxon Hill, Maryland, where she remained until her death. She held several jobs throughout her lifetime including positions at Waely Hospital, and Hot Shoppes Restaurant. She really enjoyed working in those establishments. However, her position as a teacher’s aide at Glassmanor Elementary School in Oxon Hill was by far the most rewarding.

Margaree adored her family, and supported them in all of their endeavors. She never missed a family celebration even when she wasn’t feeling well. Margaree enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. The doting grandmother became the before, after, and emergency childcare provider for her grandchildren. Her children certainly could not have paid her enough money for the attention and care she showed her grandchildren. The valuable natural; and spiritual lessons she taught them will live on forever in their hearts. On June 15, 2002, Margaree married Donald C. Scranage. The couple enjoyed 17 years of life together.

At an early age, Margaree gave her life to the Lord Jesus Christ; and joined Green Hill Baptist Church in her hometown. In 1970, she became a member of Trinity Baptist Church in northeast, Washington, D.C., under the leadership of the late Reverend Earl Hatcher. Margaree was very active in the church—loyal, and committed. She served as a deaconess, and Chairman of the Deaconess Board, a position she held until her passing. Additionally, she served as President of Trinity’s Senior Choir; was a member of the Voices of Trinity; the Pastor’s Labor Committee; and the Women’s Ministry. Furthermore, she served on the Officer’s Day Committee; Pastor’s Anniversary Committee; and Church Anniversary Committee. Margaree loved her Trinity church family. To many, she was a spiritual mother, a friend, and so much more. Trinity Baptist Church and Margaree’s lifelong fellowships there were a sweet place in her heart. Margaree always said she “was ordained by God to be a missionary.” And, as a woman of God, she truly walked the walk; and talked the talk.

“The Queen” endured many health challenges, but she never complained. She remained courageous and steadfast through it all. And, on May 13, 2020, she took her final rest. She will be greatly missed by the many people who knew and loved her.

Margaree leaves to cherish her memory, husband, Donald Scranage; special mother-in-law, Annie; children, Sonja (Ellsworth) and John (Alana); five grandchildren: Jasmine, Ashley, Sonja, Paris, and John; great-grandchild, Adria, with whom she shared a special relationship; sister, Carolyn (Willie), who was near and dear to her heart; great-aunts: Margie, Sue, Evelyn, and Pat; great-uncles, Johnnie, Mac, and Jesse; goddaughter, Valerie; best friend Brenda, fondly known as “Mitch;” and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends from near and far.

Margaree was preceded in death by her daughter, Margo McKinnon; and siblings, Beaver, Leon, Jason, Jr., and Martha.
