Obituary of Thomas B. Jones
Thomas Birry Jones, known by many nicknames (Tom, Uncle Tommy, TJ), was born in Dillwyn, VA in Buckingham County to the late Margaret Jones Moseley on January 23, 1941. Thomas departed this life on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 after a tough fight against COVID-19.
Tom was the oldest of five siblings and attended public schools in Buckingham County, VA. It was there in the country, growing up with his brother, sisters and cousin that he developed a strong sense of providing and protecting his family. After he completed the 11th grade, he moved to Washington, DC looking for employment so that he could have a better opportunity to help provide for his family.
Once in Washington, Tom found employment at the Marriott Key Bridge where he met the love of his life, Beatrice Tucker. Tom and Bea were married on September 22, 1962. Their union produced two sons, Greg and Terrill. But Tom was a father to many, helping to raise and provide guidance to the friends of his sons, nephews, nieces and cousins.
His family was always the number one priority in his life. He made sure to always provide for them. After working at the Marriott, Tom began working for the Library of Congress as a library technician until his retirement in the early 1990s. To supplement his income, he would work at the library during the day and drive his taxi for the Capital Cab company. You could see his taxi all around DC, taking passengers to their destinations and chatting along the way about his family. But his most favorite passengers were his grandkids. He faithfully would pick them up from school every day in his taxi cab. He enjoyed being in the cab, even to his last days, when he took his last ride in the cab on June 8th.
Tom loved spending time with his family and making himself available wherever and however he was needed. Every August he would travel to Buckingham County for his annual family homecoming and visit at his home church, First Liberty Baptist. He was a member of Israel Baptist Church in Washington, DC, where he became a member with his wife Bea, sons and sister Bessie and family. He devoted his life to helping and serving others.
Tom will be greatly missed by his family. He was a devoted husband to Beatrice, who preceded him in death. To cherish his memory and carry on his legacy, he leaves sons: Greg and Terrill, Sr. Two loving daughters in law: Debra and Tina. Four grandchildren: Gregory D., Concepcion, Terrill and Torrien and great granddaughter Neveah. Brother Arthur (Deloise), Sisters: Bessie Watson (James), Geneather C. Branch, Nannie Woodson (Raleigh), and Dorothy Eanes. And long-time friend Alice “Theresa” Barbour. Nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
