Obituary of Samuel Aloysius Johnson, Jr.

Please share a memory of Samuel to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Samuel A. Johnson, Jr. (Duna, Dad) was born on June 26,1951 to the late Reverend Mr. Samuel A. Johnson, Sr., and Ella Elizabeth Hill Johnson. Samuel received his formal education at St. Augustine Catholic School, later attending Archbishop John Carroll High School, graduating in 1969. He continued his education at the Washington Technical Institute and Federal City College. He also attended Prince Georges Community College and Potomac University where he earned his associate’s and bachelor’s degrees respectively.

He attended St. Augustine and Teresa of Avila churches as a child and attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help as an adult. He later attended Douglas United Methodist Church where he served as a member of the Men’s Ministry and the Men’s Chorus.  He was ordained as a Deacon at the Church of Love, Hope and Faith and a former pastor of Called With A Purpose Ministries.  He recently served at the Christ Community Church of Bowie.

Samuel was briefly employed with the US Postal Service and the Government Printing Office before he enlisted in the US Navy in April 1973 and received an honorable discharge in February 1977.  He returned to the Government Printing Office following his discharge from the US Navy.  He held several positions with Postmasters Health Insurance and Kirby vacuums, completing his federal career at the Bureau of Labor Statistics in December 2010.

He married the late Elaine Johnson and from this union produced four children, Kenneth, Timothy, Samuel III and Tamara. He later married the former Vickie Harrison in August 1996, his beloved spouse of twenty-five years.

Sam, affectionately known as “Duna”, was an avid sports fan, and rooted for all the Washington teams.  His passion was baseball!  He spent hours playing Strat-O-Matic baseball and attending baseball games at the Nationals Stadium and the Bowie Baysox Stadium.    He also loved music.  He spent his leisure hours listening to a variety of music and could easily provide you with a song title, the artist, and a history of the group.  He was also a great dancer spending lots of time with his sons perfecting their dance steps to the music of various R & B groups.

Sam passed away suddenly on August 16, 2021, at his home.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Ella Johnson and his first wife, Elaine.  Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 25 years, Vickie Johnson. his children; Kenneth (Lana), Timothy, Samuel III (Sabrena) and Tamara (Delaunte), Katrina Branch, stepson Timothy Darnell Harrison and Godson Richard Cherry (Bernise). Siblings; Martin (Denise), Teresita (James-deceased), Frank (Lisa), Mary, Barbara, a special sister-cousin Jean Gamble and Aunt, Nettie B. Hill (John-deceased), 31 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
