Obituary of Henrietta Ross Murry
Henrietta Ross Murry was born August 31, 1934 to Lee Andrew Ross, Sr. and Hattie Hall Ross. Henrietta Murry was the fourth of seven children born to this family. She professed her faith in Christ at an early age and was baptized at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Duncan, Mississippi by her father, Deacon Andrew Ross and Rev. John Conwell.
Mrs. Murry demonstrated an early appreciation for nature, the outdoors, and playing rough and tumble with her older brothers. She also developed a keen love for cooking and feeding others — which continued throughout her life.
Born and reared in Mississippi, Mrs. Murry migrated with her family to Memphis and later to Washington, DC, where she furthered her education at Armstrong Technical School and began a 30-year career at the U.S. Treasury Department.
Mrs. Murry joined First Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church in 1971 under the leadership of Reverend Ernest R. Gibson, where she served faithfully with both the Willa Mae Hinton and the Margaret Newell Missionary Circles.
Mrs. Murry was a dedicated matriarch, whose life’s work included nurturing and caring for her family and those around her. Mrs. Murry demonstrated a level of Christian compassion, guided by her love for the Lord, that allowed her to give of herself and her prayers, freely. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and neighbor. Mrs. Murry never failed to call, write or visit those she knew needed support - and most importantly, that support came without judgment.
Mrs. Murry joined First Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church in 1971 under the leadership of Reverend Ernest R. Gibson, where she served faithfully with both the Willa Mae Hinton and the Margaret Newell Missionary Circles.
Mrs. Murry was preceded in death by both her parents; four brothers (Lee Andrew, Jr., Clardia, Percy and Lovie Lee); her elder sister, Torcy; her husband, Cecil Murry; and her son, Walter.
Mrs. Murry leaves to cherish her memory: one sister, Lee Anna Ross-Clark (McKinley); three daughters, Carlotta, Alisha and Sheila; three sons, Sharrow (Michelle), Anthony and Dennis; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
