Obituary of Betty Ruth Carter

Betty Ruth Carter was born on May 3, 1943 to the union of Katie Mae Hunter and Toby Jenkins in Anderson, South Carolina, and she was called home on December 11, 2021. She moved to Washington, DC as a young child at the age of 13 with her family. Betty received her formal education and graduated from Cardozo High School Class of ’63, where she remained an active alumni member. She attended Howard University before earning a BA in History at University of The District Of Columbia.

Betty was a Note Examiner at Bureau of Engraving, Secretary at the Deleuw Cather Consultant Engineering firm for WMATA, and a Program Assistant/Specialist at the National Endowment for Humanities before retiring. After retirement, she worked as an independent contractor for Social Security Administration.

Betty was an active member of Paramount Baptist Church and the Bureau of Engraving Retirement Club. She enjoyed arts and crafts, sewing, baking, reading, playing cards, traveling and most of all spending time with family and friends, and attending family activities.

Betty leaves behind two brothers, Martin Cornwell (Ginger Cornwell) in Fort Washington, Maryland and Robert Jenkins (Beverly Jenkins) in Lansing , Michigan, one sister, April Jenkins in Lansing, Michigan, and siblings Elizabeth Turner Jenkins, Timothy Jenkins, Raymond Jenkins, Montgomery Cornwell preceded her in death; aunt, Mamie Williford in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Uncle Waymon C. Hunter in Anderson, South Carolina, Great-great aunt Viola Hill in Sandusky, Ohio, and Aunt Johanna Jenkins in Anderson, South Carolina, along with a host of family and friends.
