My mother was a strong and hardworking woman who taught her children independence. A strong advocate for education she supported all her children and family to attain their highest d, desires. As I Look forward to be re-united with her in the new earth I will continually cherish the sayings that sprinkled our conversations- take time to smell the roses, perfect love casteth out fear, can’t is a word in the book of fools, never leave off for tomorrow what can be done today, a fool and his money are soon parted, do not be penny wise and pound foolish, procrastination is a thief of time and Rome was not built in a day. I fondly remembered one Sunday as she came into the house after working all morning in the yard she exclaimed this last saying that my dad leaned over and whispered “that’s because she was not there”.

This candle symbolizes my Aunty Joyce’s wisdom, quiet strength and discipline. I will always remember her wise words to me, 20 years ago, when I needed a shoulder to lean on. We had some wonderful times and chats. She helped me to understand, navigate and bravely face the vicissitudes of life. Even though she is no longer here, her stories, her insights and wise words will live on in me and hopefully, I’ll be able to pass them on to my son; keeping her memory alive for generations to come.

"GRANDMAAAAHHHHH" - that's the greeting I would often give her whenever our paths would cross. She would always respond with "Boy, what I gon tell you" - which always made me smile. From being her personal pedicurist, to playing dominoes, to watching her "stories", my Grandma and I always had a fun time. I cherish so many things about her but what I will always remember is how she loved to surprise me on my birthday and show up wherever I was. To this day, I always expect to hear the doorbell ring on my birthday and see her on the porch waiting to embrace me. They say that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.
