Obituary of Kirk W. Jennings

Kirk W. Jennings was born on December 8, 1946 to the late Elder Lewis Jennings, Sr. and Mother Claudia Jennings at the District of Columbia General Hospital, Washington, D.C.  

Kirk attended Washington, D.C. public schools.  Kirk was very athletic and enjoyed playing football and basketball with the neighborhood youth. He had an infectious sense of humor and loved to joke around! After graduating from high school, he worked with

his father as a cement finisher. In 1963, Kirk joined the United States Army and served for 5 years.       

In 1977, Kirk became a resident at the Roxbury Correctional Institute.

During his stay at the Institute, Kirk remembered the values that his parents taught. He made the decision to seek direction from the Lord.  In time, Kirk grew where he was planted!  He found purpose and meaning and was able to positively impact the lives of many of the residents and those who worked at the Institute.  The Chaplain expressed how Kirk was able to keep many of the younger men out of trouble; he encouraged them in a positive and supportive way to become stronger men and to prepare themselves for a better life.  

Kirk knew that his family always loved him, and had prepared a place for him upon release. The officials of the Institute wanted him to stay and become an employee because his ministry there had helped so many of the residents. Kirk fulfilled his unique purpose there.  On March 20, 2018, he transitioned from his earthy life.  In spite of the circumstances, he never lost his faith in God. He was free at last!!      

He leaves to cherish his memories: his former wife Diane Jennings-Ashton; two sons: Kirk Wesley, Jr. and David Jennings; three sisters: Gloria Brock-Smith, Naomi Lipscomb (Osie) Denice Bess (Jeffrey); two brothers: Bishop Lewis Jennings (Mae) and Phillip Jennings; along with a host of relatives and friends.
