Obituary of Audrey Jean Matthews
Audrey Jean Matthews was born July 16, 1940 in Pitt County, NC. She was called home with God on April 7, 2018. She was the daughter of the late Claude Wooten and Lillie Liza Horne-Wooten. She was educated in the Edgecombe County public schools.
She married the late Melvin Thomas Matthews, Sr. From this union were four children. Melvin, Kenneth (Deceased), Sheilaand Keesha. Audrey served the Lord and his people all her life. From singing in the choir at Dilda Chapel of Fountain, NC as a young child and later in other churches to include The Atlantic Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Milton Wilcher, Sr. (deceased) and Pastor Kenneth L. Williams, Sr. of The Seek and Save Deliverance Worship Center. She joined Love Fellowship Temple of Praise and served as the Mother of the church and Prayer Warrior with Pastor Sheila Keels. Singing was one of her favorite hobbies along with cooking and keeping her Grandchildren. She also had a desire to care for her Great Grandson too. She also loved to complete her Sunday’s Best with a matching Hat.
Mother Matthews would talk to everyone but she had few that she would speak with on a daily basis. Her only sister Catherine Draughn, Nephew Minister JR Neal, Nieces Geraldine Fields and Carrie Lamb. She would also talk to childhood friend Jean Shirley Reeves and other friends Francis Jones, Mary Frances Boyd and Benjamin Exum.
Mother Matthews was a prayer warrior and possessed the gift of healing and was a straight shooter always speaking the truth and doing it in love. Mother Matthews has many Godsons and other children who came in her life that she adopted as her grands. She loved singing and attending Gospel concerts to hear The Gospel Pearls and The Soul Messengers.
She is survived by her Sister, Catherine Draughn of Fountain, NC, 3 children Melvin Matthews, Jr. (Niki), Sheila Keels (Thom) and Keesha Jean Matthews all of Howard County, MD, 2 Grandsons Mario Pierre Matthews, Sr. of Elkridge MD, Melvin Matthews, III of Winnsboro, SC, 4 Granddaughters Shatia J. West of District Heights, MD, Kiera Matthews of Winnsboro, SC Jaylah Jones and Alannah Jones of Columbia, MD. 2 Sisters-in-love, Ruth Joyner of Capital Heights, MD and Edna Williams of Greenville, NC, one Great Grandson Mario Pierre Matthews, Jr. of Rockville, MD and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, Great-great nieces and nephews, whom she had special relationships with.
