Obituary of Naomi Bernice Carter
Mother Naomi Bernice Carter departed this life on Friday, August 24, 2018 in Randallstown, Maryland. She was the wife of the late Elder John H. Carter, Sr. and the sixth daughter of the late Mother Corrine Ginwright- Williams and James S. Williams and the god-daughter of the late Bishop James Thomas Morris of the Highway Christian Church of Christ in Washington, DC.
Mother Carter was baptized and filled with the blessed Holy Ghost at age nine at the Highway Christian Church of Christ, Washington, DC. She was a Sunday school teacher; she directed the church choir and formulated the group called The Jewel Tones, who traveled the eastern coast to various churches singing to the glory of God. She also established the group called the Sunbeams who consisted of her nieces: Adrian, Antoinette, Diane and the late Shebna. Mother Carter was blessed by the Lord with the gift of singing, playing the piano and organ without formal education. This special anointing would cause many to compare her talent to that of gospel greats such as Shirley Caesar and Aretha Franklin.
Mother Carter attended the District of Columbia Public Schools. She received her Nursing Degree from the Armstrong Adult Education Center in Washington, DC and her Baccalaureate and Masters’ Degrees in Health and Human Services from the Lincoln University Lincoln, Pennsylvania.
Mother Carter dedicated her life to ministry and service to others. She and Elder Carter worked hand in hand as co-laborers in Christ and founded the Highway Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ, in Spotsylvania, Virginia. Their unyieldingly mission to save souls reaped a great harvest and brought many including his fa- ther, brothers, sister, nieces and nephews to Christ. She would say – “What Bless- ing to Bring in the Whole House” Prophetically decreeing the phrase – “The Whole House” as proclaimed by Bishop Fields, pastor of Refuge Temple Church.
Mother Carter leaves to mourn her seven children; John, Jr. (Crystal) of Raleigh, North Carolina; Stephanie Carter Naar of Forestville, Maryland; James (Shontae) of Baltimore, Maryland; Kevin and Gregory of Greenbelt, Maryland; Brittany of Atlanta, Georgia; and Whitney of Lexington, South Carolina; four grandsons (Greyson, Garrett, Gavin and Devon) and six grand-daughters; Eb- ony, Tiffany, Dalis, Zabyia, Meziah and Naomi; five great grandchildren, one cousin; Bishop Herman Ginwright of the Highway Christian Church of Christ, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
