Obituary of Trevor Bernard Whaley

Please share a memory of Trevor to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Trevor Bernard Whaley, Sr. was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina on April 8, 1969 to Angelina Hampton. He was raised by his grandmother Sadie Whaley and graduated from Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School on June 8, 1987. He later furthered his education and received an Associate of Arts Degree from Coastline Community College in May 2009.

On August 4, 1987, Trevor entered the Navy. He was always very ambitious and rapidly excelled through the ranks during his military career. He was promoted to Seaman Apprentice in February 1988, became a First-Class Petty Officer in December 1995, and made Chief Petty Officer in January 1998. Although, excelling to Chief Petty Officer was a great accomplishment, Trevor did not stop there; he moved on to become a Commissioned Ensign Officer in October 1999, a Lieutenant Junior Grade Officer in October 2001, and was promoted to his final rank of Lieutenant in October 2003. In 2009, Trevor was selected to become a Lieutenant-Commander, but decided to retire from his stellar military career to focus on and spend time with his family. He retired in September 2009.

Trevor was hired as a Physical/Industrial Security Specialist with the Science Application International Corporation (SAIC) in 2009. He was quickly promoted to a Functional Lead/Senior Security Specialist.

On December 6, 2010, he joined the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Office of the Chief Security Officer, and was initially assigned as the Special Security Officer (SSO) and Acting Branch Chief. He provided support to the Office of the Under Secretary for Intelligence & Analysis (OI&A). His dedication to duty ensured that OI&A leadership, customers and its partners consistently adhered to the laws and directives governing the protection of classified information, people and assets. Trevor was known by many to be dedicated and committed to the mission.

Trevor was promoted and reassigned as the SSO Team Lead for the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO). As a recognized subject matter expert, Trevor managed DNDO’s collateral security program and provided oversight and support to highly sensitive classified security programs. His dedication to supporting DNDO’s mission will never be forgotten.

In February 1989, while the USS Coontz was in Philadelphia, Trevor met Renee Goldsby at Kahootz - it was a night to remember! They fell in love and united in holy matrimony on May 26, 1991. Their union was blessed with two wonderful children - his favorite daughter, Tiffani and his favorite son, Trevor, Jr. (TJ). Trevor enjoyed spending time with his family, especially playing Spades around the kitchen table, and watching the Eagles beat the Redskins! He loved traveling with his family to places like Australia, London, Venice, Croatia, and Italy, just to name a few. He loved his dogs (Scruffy and Gellie) and was blessed to receive as a birthday gift from his wife, a Bullmastiff affectionately named “Goose”.

Many people may not know, but, Trevor belonged to the Order of the Feather Fraternity, an organization for young black men that specializes in providing community service, leadership, guidance and mentoring for young men in the New York area. Trevor pledged and crossed in 2016, to the Feather's Graduate Chapter, The Order of the Bonnet Fraternity along with seven other line brothers.  Trevor LOVED the Feather and he LOVED his Brothers.  The Brotherhood extends their love and blessings to the family.  EEEYYYUUU....... Follow the Gleam!

Trevor leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Renee Whaley; his daughter, Tiffani Whaley; his son, Trevor Whaley, Jr.; his mother Angelina Hampton (Joseph Hampton); a brother William Lamont Wells; an uncle Clemont Whaley Jr.; three aunts, Dean Elliott, Shirley Williams and Charlese Whaley; a niece, Alexandria Wells; two nephews; Joelle Wells and Elijah Whaley; and a host of many loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Sadie Whaley; his mother-in-law Shirley Goldsby; and his sister, Hope Wells.
